Francis Giampietro exchanges body hair with Ivan Monforte of New York, in order to create two brick sized resin cubes of hair.
The Analysis of Booty, by William Hogarth edited by Aimee Lusty.
Finally finished and now available:
$10 + $3 Shipping.
80 pgs. b/w xerox on pink paper.
8.5 x 11 inches.

A contemporary translation of William Hogarth’s 1753 book The Analysis of Beauty. While the same ideals of aesthetics still exist they are forced into the shadows by the obsession with personal beauty and physical appearance as influenced by pop culture and the media, especially affecting women. Throughout the essay every mention of beauty is replaced with the word “booty.”

Hogarth implements six principles which independently affect beauty: fitness, variety, regularity, simplicity, intricacy, and quantity and greatness. In this new translation each principle is illustrated by a different stereotype of woman, thus critiquing the ageless mindset that women are objects of beauty to be analyzed.

Focusing on Hogarth’s attraction to the serpentine line and retranslating to contemporary standards, The Analysis of Booty illustrates these thoughts with pornographic women and contemporary examples of ideals of beauty. The plates in the book have been replaced with iconic “booty” references, illustrating the abundance of these images, not only on the internet, but also television, advertisements, and film.

While The Analysis of Beauty is a timeless bible to how we see and interpret beauty in art and objects, contemporary aesthetics and ideals of physical beauty have changed drastically from the modest attraction to a female nude, to an aggressive attraction towards scantily clad fashion, focusing more so on sex than sensuality. The Analysis of Booty is a critique on the abundance of sex and objectification of women in the media, and its consequent deformation of the aesthetics of beauty.

Union Gallery is pleased to present “Space Jam,” a group exhibition themed on 2-dimensional
works that venture into 3-dimensional space, where the imagined world becomes the audiences’
reality. Each artist establishes an explorative environment using traditionally flat and
dimensionless media. “Space Jam” is an orchestrated jamming of handcrafted microcosms into
one all-encompassing space.
The exhibition showcases artwork by: Yo Fukui, Yasemin Kackar- Demirel, Dina
Kelberman, Andrea Loefke, Scott Meyers, Devin Powers, Alan Resnick and Ryan
Syrell.
These artists explore what happens when drawings, paintings, prints, and collage begin to break
away from the walls and become installations. The general restrictions of framing works and
limiting them to wall-space inhibits the possibilities these mediums are capable of. These
handcrafted worlds encourage individual experiences and interpretations. All pieces are site-specific
installations that challenge the artists’ conventions of two-dimensional work, spanning from
minimalist drawing to audience interactive pieces. The installations simulate the sensation of
stepping into a drawing, allowing viewers to experience the dimensionality that artists strive to
imitate in physically flat works.

The 359 Broadway building has a rich history. Originally built in 1853, the space
was once the studio and home of the great American photographer Mathew Brady. The
ground floor currently occupied by the Union Gallery was originally Thompson’s
Saloon, frequented by literary and artistic luminaries such as Walt Whitman. The
building is also the former location
of many galleries and art events including Leo Koenig Gallery, Canada Gallery,
and studio of our founder John Peet. It is also well known as the location of
other experiments in contemporary art including the site for the recently
released documentary “We Live in Public.”

The Union Gallery will offer many new programs and opportunities for artists and
curators alike. We remain open to curatorial submissions and will continue to
show a wide array of contemporary artists and work.

Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective
May 20, 2009–August 16, 2009
Special Exhibition Galleries, 2nd floor

The first major exhibition in New York in twenty years devoted to one of the most important painters of the twentieth-century, Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective features 130 works (65 paintings and 65 archival items) that span the entirety of the artist’s full and celebrated career. The landmark exhibition and its accompanying catalogue, which mark the centenary of the artist’s birth in Dublin in 1909, bring together the most significant works from each period of Bacon’s career, focusing on the key subjects and themes that run through his extraordinary creative output. This presentation affords the most comprehensive examination to date of Bacon’s sources and working processes, offering a reevaluation of the artist’s work in light of a range of new interpretations and archival materials that have emerged since his death in 1992. The Metropolitan is the sole U.S. venue for this exhibition, which draws from public and private collections around the world.
Accompanied by a catalogue.

The exhibition is made possible in part by The Daniel and Estrellita Brodsky Foundation and Paula Cussi.
The exhibition was organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and Tate Britain, London, in partnership with the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
It is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
